Biochem/physiol Actions
ZCCHC16 (zinc finger, CCHC domain containing 16) gene is a gag-derived gene with the longest introns that belongs to the Mart gene family of proteins. It is commonly refered to as Mart4. The human gene contains 2 introns in the 5′ UTR region. One intron is 47.8kb long and the other is 323.3kb long. This gene is similar to the mammalian retrogenes that contain long introns at 5′ UTRs. In mouse, this gene contains six introns. The gene may be involved in embryogenesis but does not play any role during placentogenesis.

Biochem/physiol Actions
ZDHHC5 (zinc finger, DHHC-type containing 5) is a palmitoyl acyltransferase (PAT), which has its three cysteine residues S-acylated, within the CCX7-13C(S/T) motif. It is responsible for the palmitoylation of somatostatin receptor subtype 5 (SSTR5), which is a GPCR (G-protein coupled receptor). It might also be involved in the palmitoylation of other GPCRs, especially in the brain. This might explain its role in learning, memory and synaptic function. Also this protein is highly expressed in neurons, and might have an essential regulatory role in the neurons. Suppression of ZDHHC5 in mice, shows reduced learning capabilities, and this protein is also linked with neuropsychiatric disorders. This gene locus is also associated with bipolar disorder. It also palmitoylates GRIP1 (Glutamate receptor-interacting protein 1)b protein, and targets it to the endosomes of dendritic cells. This way it controls the trafficking of AMPA-R (α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid receptor).

Biochem/physiol Actions
The gene ZDHHC6 (zinc finger DHHC-type containing 6), also referred to as DHHC-6, encodes a palmitoyltransferase that catalyzes the palmitoylation of calnexin on two juxtamembranous cysteines. It is localized to the ER (endoplasmic reticulum) and targets calnexin to the central ER. It is the only palmitoyltransferase involved in this process out of the 16 DHHC enzymes present in the mammalian ER. Overexpression of DHHC6 leads to increased palmitoylation of endogenous as well as ectopically expressed calnexin. Knock down of DHHC6 results in a change in cell morphology. Palmitoylation of calnexin controls the association of calnexin with the ribosome–translocon complex (RTC) forming a supercomplex. The formation of this supercomplex is necessary for the capture of proteins by chaperones outside the translocon and to initiate folding.
