We may have goals and objectives. A vision, however, transcends objectives. It is larger than we are. When we find and pursue it, we may even feel we are being carried along by a force greater than ourselves. Dr. Mihály Csíkszentmihályi, a psychology professor at Claremont Graduate University, describes this experience as “flow” and explains that the path toward achieving it begins with acquiring control over the contents of our own consciousness. “Getting control of life is never easy,” he writes, “and sometimes it can be definitely painful.
People can be taught how to recognize the reasoning they use when they design and implement their actions,” says Argyris. “They can begin to identify the inconsistencies between their espoused and actual theories of action. They can face up to the fact that they unconsciously design and implement actions that they do not intend. ”5 A personal story comes to mind. When I was teaching in Brooklyn, I was also hired to coach the school’s basketball team.
