By mid-century, in I758, there were 6,433 people, and by 1775, 10,664 in the city proper, and 15,784 counting both the city and the countryside immediately surrounding it. 18 Immigration had swelled the population of Trieste, and diversity was its watchword. Trieste's streets were a colorful mixture of peoples, languages, and costumes. Italians, Germans, French, English, Dutch, and newcomers from other Habsburg domains, the Balkans, and the Levant peopled the Page 16 city, and the distinctive religious-ethnic groupsJews, Greeks, Serbs, Armenians, and Protestantscomprised a significant element of the population.

In the recent judgments of two Habsburg historians, H. "23 For Jewish history in particular, the Habsburg Monarchy provides an important venue for the study of reforming absolutism. As a result of the late-eighteenth-century partitions of Poland, and especially the first one in 1772, which made Galicia a Habsburg province, the Habsburg Monarchy contained the largest Jewish population in Europe west of the Russian Empire, and this population comprised central and eastern European, northern and southern Jewries.
